The CBS News Race and Culture Unit has a four-pronged role at CBS News and Stations as a reviewer, an incubator, a producer and a library. The unit’s primary role is as a reviewer, working in concert with the CBS News Standards and Ethics department to ensure all stories have the proper context, tone and intention.
The Race and Culture Unit works with CBS News network shows, the streaming network and stations by reviewing scripts and screeners as well as providing input in the ideation stage of story ideas. As an incubator, the Race and Culture Unit also serves as a place for all CBS News staffers to bring ideas for stories and projects for possible production by the broadcasts and streaming platforms. Additionally, we partnered with BET News to produce a monthly newsmagazine show called America In Black which reports on African American issues from around the country and the world. Lastly, the unit serves as a library which runs CBS Village – this serves as a repository and showcase for all of the diverse stories from CBS News and stations.
